Importing pets into Miri

This information has been compiled to give you some indication of what will be involved when planning to import pets into Sarawak. Please note that regulations change frequently so it is essential that you check the latest requirements well in advance of your move. Details of one of the local Veterinary Surgeons who can assist you with all of the necessary paperwork are given below.

Borneo does not have rabies, so the main concern is to keep the island rabies-free. To date there are no immediate plans for Sarawak to become part of the Pet Travel Scheme.

Note that there is currently a ban on importing certain dog breeds including:

  • Pit Bull Terrier or American Pit BullPit
  • American Staffordshire Terrier
  • Staffordshire Bull Terrier
  • American Bulldog
  • Napolitan Mastiff
  • Japanese Tosa (Tosa-Inu, Tosa Uen)
  • Akita Inu (Japanese Akita, Akita, Great Japanese Dog)
  • Dogo Argentino
  • Fila Braziliero

German Shephards (Alsatians), Rottweilers and Dobermans are subject to special import conditions.

There is also a minimum age: dogs and cats should be at least 3 months old at the time of import.

Note that if the bird, animal or fish you are importing is deemed exotic it may need an import permit and approval from the department of wildlife conservation (CITES permit).Department of Wildlife Conservation.

It is quicker and easier to use one of the local Veterinary Surgeons to arrange the paperwork for you. Dr Ling and Dr Tan from the Live Animal Medical run an export-import service for pets and have been used by a number of people. Their contact details are in the section headed “Veterinarians”.

Further information relating to importing animals into Sarawak can be found by contacting the Sarawak State Veterinary Authority at the Department of Agriculture.

Quarantine

There is currently no quarantine for animals coming from the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Brunei and Sabah provided that they have been in the country for at least 6 months or 12 months for Brunei and Sabah. From all other countries there is a period of quarantine of up to 6 months; the exact period is determined from the date of the last rabies vaccination and subsequent blood test. However quarantine regulations can differ according to the species of animal or bird and all regulations can change depending on the current situation so it is important to check with Dr Ling for the latest requirements well in advance of your arrival. If quarantine is required, book a place in the quarantine centre as early as possible to ensure availability prior to making transport arrangements.

All materials accompanying an animal or bird (feed, plastic, bone etc.) are not permitted to enter Malaysia unless special permission is issued by the veterinary authority.

Quarantine kennels

The quarantine kennels are currently located in the area behind GK Supermarket, ten minutes drive from Piasau Camp and Lutong. There are plans however to open a new quarantine centre by the Sarawak/Brunei border which is a 20 minute drive from Piasau Camp.

The quarantine kennels are basic, with bare concrete walls and floor and no outside runs, but they are relatively clean. You can arrange for some bedding and toys to be taken into the kennels. Animals are fed twice a day. If you prefer, you can take in your own food rather than rely on what is provided by the kennels.

By pre-arrangement you can visit twice daily although week-end visits can be difficult to arrange. The cost is very low, a few Malaysian dollars a day. As an alternative to keeping your pet in quarantine in Miri, you could put the animal in quarantine in Britain or Australia, where facilities are better, but the cost will then be much higher and you will not be able to visit the animal.

    Quarantine Fees (estimate)

    Estimated cost per day:

  • Dogs: large RM 5.00, small RM 3.00
  • Cats: all sizes RM 3.00
  • Quarantine Certificate: RM 2.00

As an alternative to keeping your pet in quarantine in Miri, you could put the animal in quarantine in Britain or Australia, where facilities are better but more expensive but you will not be able to visit the animal.

Transporting the animal

Transport could be a problem area. Malaysia Airlines are not used to handling animals and there have been cases where animals have missed their connection and arrived 24 hours late, having been left without food and water during this time. However, Malaysia Airlines is the only company with connecting flights from mainland Malaysia or Singapore, so there is no alternative at the present time.

See MAS Animal Hotel.

It is best to book your animal on the same flights as yourself, as excess baggage, and make sure they make the connection. You can make sure your pet catches a connecting flight when you arrive in Kuala Lumpur (and then arrange for it to be met in Miri) but this adds another complication when first arriving at Kuala Lumpur: internal and international flights depart from a different terminals.

Animals are not permitted in some transit accommodation in Miri, so you will have to make alternative arrangements for the care of your animals in the short term.

Documentation

All dogs and cats must be identified by a microchip that can be read by an ISO compatible reader.

There are a number of documents required to import a pet.

  • An export licence from the country of origin and an import licence.
  • A veterinary health certificate from the country of origin which states that the animal is free from certain diseases.
  • A health and vaccination record card in particular stating the date of the last rabies vaccination.
  • A photo of the animal (requirements differ depending on the type of animal and the country of origin).
  • Extra documentation may be required for different species of animal or bird.

Dr Ling is able to arrange all the necessary paperwork on your behalf and to inform the Government Veterinary Officer prior to arrival.
